Making a big decision? May the force be with you
How to use a Force Field analysis for big decisions
Good morning friend! ☕️
Hope you had a restful weekend.
For the SA folks, last friday was Human Rights Day.
The key idea is that everyone has a right to: Life, Equality and Human dignity.
Heavy stuff.
But a good reminder:
It’s a great time to be alive.
I don’t think anyone in history has had more opportunities than us.
With big opportunities come big, difficult decisions.
How to structure your thinking with these?
Grab your coffee,
Let’s chat!
"In any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing, the next best thing is the wrong thing, and the worst thing you can do is nothing." – Theodore Roosevelt

Making Big Decisions with Clarity and Confidence
Big decisions are daunting.
We often find ourselves paralyzed by uncertainty.
It could be joining the dark side, a career move, a life choice.
What if you had a structured way to analyze your choices logically?
Enter the Force Field Analysis tool.

Big decisions can be daunting, as Luke Skywalker found in Star Wars. May the Force be with you, Luke.
What is the Force Field Analysis?
The Force Field Analysis is a powerful decision-making tool developed by social psychologist Kurt Lewin.
It helps you visually map out the forces for and against a particular change.
By understanding these forces, you can make a well-informed choice.

Driving forces push you towards your decision. Restraining forces hold you back from your decision.
How to Use Force Field Analysis for Big Decisions
Define the Decision Clearly – Write down the change or decision you are considering. Be specific. For example: "Should I join the Dark Side?"
Identify Driving Forces – List all the factors driving you toward making this decision. These could include greater financial potential, personal fulfillment or better work-life balance.
Identify Restraining Forces – List the obstacles or risks that are restraining you from making the change. This could be financial uncertainty, lack of experience, family responsibilities, or fear of failure.
Assign Scores to Each Force – Not all forces are equal. Give each force a score (e.g., 1 to 5) based on its impact. This helps quantify the intensity of each factor.
Analyze and Adjust – If the restraining forces outweigh the driving forces, consider how you can reduce those barriers. Can you upskill? Build a financial safety net? Seek mentorship? Similarly, look for ways to strengthen your driving forces.
"It is in your moments of decision that your destiny is shaped." – Tony Robbins
Example: Should Luke Skywalker join the dark side?
Luke Skywalker faced the ultimate decision in the Star Wars franchise.
Let’s apply the Force Field Analysis to his decision:

Driving Forces (Pushing Luke Toward the Dark Side)
Promise of Power (+2) – The Dark Side offers immense power, faster mastery of the Force, and the ability to defeat his enemies.
Family Connection (+5) – Darth Vader, his father, urges him to join, promising they can rule the galaxy together.
Revenge & Anger (+3) – The pain of losing friends and his mentor (Obi-Wan) makes the Dark Side’s aggressive approach tempting.
Total Driving Force Score: 10
Restraining Forces (Holding Luke Back from the Dark Side)
Jedi Teachings (-5) – He has been trained to resist anger, fear, and hate, which lead to suffering.
Moral Integrity (-4) – He values justice and doesn’t want to follow in Vader’s footsteps.
Friends & Rebel Cause (-4) – He has strong ties to Leia, Han, and the Rebel Alliance, who oppose the Sith.
Total Restraining Force Score: -13
Analysis & Conclusion:
With scores of 10 vs. 13, the forces are weighted towards resisting the Dark Side.
His Jedi values (restraining forces) weaken the appeal of the Dark Side (driving forces).
While Luke is heavily conflicted here, he could use the clarity that the Force Field Analysis brings and make a more data-driven decision.
