Morning friend ☕️

Last week, Thandi stood in front of the room and said:

No hiding. No performance.

This week, in Episode 10 of 13, that answer comes back to her.
Because once people trust your judgment…
They start watching what you’ll spend to protect it.

Grab your coffee.

Let’s chat!

Episode 10: The Trade-Off

Michael doesn’t sit.

He stands just inside her space.

“Got a minute?”

Thandi nods. Closes her laptop halfway.

“I’ve been thinking about where this is going,” he says.
“I’m carrying more than I was six months ago. More ownership. More exposure.”

“I know.”

A beat.

“So I need something to change. Not eventually. Now.”

Silence.

"I'm not asking for a favour," he says. "I'm asking for the thing I've already been doing to be recognised."

A pause.

"If that's not on the table, I need to know."

No edge. No threat.

Just… placed.

Thandi glances at the Heisenberg plan.

Tight. Balanced.

Her instinct rises.

Smooth it.

“We can work toward—”

She stops.

Silence.

Michael waits.

“I can’t get this approved by Friday,” she says.

“But I’d like to put you in as technical lead on Heisenberg ahead of the process.”

“That’s visible,” he says.

She nods.

A beat.

“Okay,” he says, turning to leave.

Then, almost as an afterthought:

“People will read into it.”

She doesn’t respond straight away.

Then:

“I know.”

He nods once and walks out.

Pressure Doesn’t Sit Still

Thandi catches Anand between meetings.

“Quick one.”

He doesn’t stop walking.

“Let’s get a quick coffee.”

“I’m putting Michael in as technical lead on Heisenberg,” she says.
“Effective now. Ahead of sign-off.”

He nods once.
Keeps moving.

“Why?” he asks.

A beat.

“He’s already there,” she says.
“Just not on paper.”

A few steps.

“And the rest of them?” he says.

She doesn’t answer straight away.

“They’ll feel it,” she says.

He glances at her.

“Of course they will.”

A few more steps.

“You going to wait for it to settle?”

“No.”

Silence.

He nods once.

“Then don’t drift,” he says.
“Make it real.”

And keeps walking.

Make It Real

The team gathers.

This time, intentionally.

“I’m making a change,” Thandi says.

“Michael steps in as technical lead on Heisenberg. Effective now.”

Silence.

Aisha frowns slightly.

“Is that approved?”

“Not yet,” Thandi says.
“But I’m backing it.”

Aisha nods slowly.
But doesn’t look at Michael.
Or anyone else.

Another pause.

Jason leans back.

“So this is not a formal promotion?”

“Not yet.”

He nods once.

“Okay.”

A beat.

“Just want to be clear what we’re signing up for.”

Werner steps forward.

He uncaps the marker.

Adds to the board:

Tech Lead: Michael

No explanation.

Now it exists.
It wasn’t just on the board anymore.
It was in the system.

The room absorbs it.

Behaviour Shifts First

That afternoon, Thandi feels it.

Jason checks with Michael before committing.

Aisha routes questions through him.

Conversations shorten when she walks past.

No pushback.

Just adjustment.

More careful.

More contained.

Michael stays late.

Not because he has to.

He's rewriting the technical handover docs.

Quietly.

On his own.

That's new.

Reality Echo

In Steerco, Richard Vale, CIO is walked through the weekly pack.

Technical Lead: Michael (interim, pending approval)

He stops on the line.

“Interim?”

“Yes.”, says Thandi.

“Not approved.”

“Not yet.”

A pause.

He leans back.

“So you’ve taken that risk yourself.”

“Yes.”

Silence.

He nods once.

“We'll see. This one will be visible.”

Reflective Unpacking

When you move someone ahead of the system…
you move yourself with them.

The change shows up quickly.
Not in results.
In behaviour.

More careful.
More contained.

The room wasn’t confused.
It just wasn’t neutral anymore.

The real question to ask yourself

When something matters, most managers ask:

How do I protect the plan?

A harder question is:

Who am I willing to stand behind before it’s safe?

Key takeaway

Leadership isn’t waiting for permission.

It’s making something real…

and staying there while the system catches up.

Until next week,
